For the past 4 years, Eye Center South-Dothan, the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and the UAB School of Optometry have partnered to offer credited college courses taught by the ECS Medical Staff and Leadership Team. Classes are hands on, offering practical experience to students who are deciding their medical specialty. These elective rotations are offered in (2), (4) and (6) week time increments. Student surveys are overwhelmingly positive noting one of the highlights is learning the Administrative side of healthcare from our Leadership Team. Students round with all aspects of Clinic Administrative operations such as Front Desk, Insurance and Billing, Scheduling/Call Center, Education and Training and Marketing. They also round with each of our Ophthalmologists to gain insights to the unique aspects of each eye subspecialty. This offering has gained popularity and student enrollment continues to increase. This program is a wonderful learning opportunity for Ophthalmology and Optometry students who may be visiting the Wiregrass for the first time. Exposure to our community could influence their decision to locate here for job opportunities after graduating.
