Drastic Increase in Nearsightedness
Recent studies have found that the number of individuals living with nearsightedness is on the rise. In the 1970s, statistics showed that approximately 25% of people were nearsighted. Today that percentage has grown to 42%. Nearsightedness is also known as myopia and prevents individuals from seeing objects at a distance clearly. This condition has not only been recognized in the United States, but China also has a large number of individuals who are nearsighted- up to 80% of the total population. The cause of this drastic increase is believed to be all of the close-up work used in modern society including the use of computers, smartphones, reading, and video games.
Nearsightedness can be easily corrected with laser vision correction known as LASIK and with ICL Procedure (Implantable Contact Lens). Both of these Vision Improvement Procedures are offered at Eye Center South. If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for this procedure, please contact our office at 800-467-1393 to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Marnix Heersink, Dr. Sebastian Heersink, and Dr. Zsolt Bansagi.
