Children’s Eye Care
August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month! It’s also that time again for kids to return to school, and with all the preparation, have you stopped to think about your child’s vision?
Good vision is essential for proper physical development and educational progress in growing children. Early detection of treatable eye disease in infancy and childhood can have far-reaching implication for vision and in some cases, for general health. Young children might not be able to tell you if they are having eye problems, but parents are usually able to recognize the signs of eye problems. Here are some common signs to be aware of: If your child fails to notice new things around them, squints when the light is not bright or turned on, rubs their eyes when they are not tired, has excessive tearing when not crying, holds a book too close or sits too close to the TV screen, their eyes look crossed, have pupils that are not the same size or appear white instead of black. These are just some of the signs that a child might be having problems with their vision. During regular pediatric appointments, your child’s eyes should be examined and a vision test should be performed around age three.
If you suspect that your child is having vision problems, please schedule an appointment with your optometrist or contact Eye Center South at 800-467-1393, for an examination with our Board-Certified Pediatric Ophthalmologist, Dr. Irene Ludwig.
