According to new global estimates on the prevalence released by the WHO, more than 360 million people in the world have disabling hearing loss. One in three persons over the age of 65 years old live with hearing loss and another 32 million affected are children under the age of 15.
Did you know that infections of the ear are the leading cause of children affected with hearing loss? Some of the infectious diseases that cause hearing loss is rubella, meningitis, measles, and mumps. Most of these diseases can be prevented through vaccination. Some other common causes of hearing loss consist of being exposed to excessive noise, injuries to the head or ear, aging, genetic causes and problems during pregnancy.
Half of most cases of hearing loss could have been easily prevented, while many can be treated if caught in the early stages and diagnosed.
